The key to profitable window fitting lies in combining speed with quality workmanship. While rushing can lead to costly callbacks, unnecessarily slow installations eat into your margins.

Drawing from our decades of experience supplying uPVC windows to trade professionals, we’ve compiled essential guidance to speed up your installations without cutting corners. We’ll also look at some of the common problems that occur during window installation and how to solve them.

Essential Preparation

Before any installation begins, thorough preparation sets the foundation for success. Taking accurate measurements is crucial, as even minor discrepancies between the window frame and aperture can cause significant delays. Beyond measurements, organising your tools and materials in advance ensures a smooth workflow once you’re on site.

The most successful installers we work with maintain detailed checklists for each job, including all necessary tools, fixings, sealants, and protective materials. They also factor in the specific requirements of different brickwork types and potential challenges with existing window removal.

Three Tips for Installing UPVC Windows

There are several ways that you can improve the speed of your installations. We’ve narrowed it down to the most important three.

Pre-Measure and Prepare Everything in Advance

Success starts well before you arrive on site. Begin by double-checking all measurements of the existing window and opening. Consider both width and height at multiple points, as older properties can have uneven openings. Prepare your materials based on these measurements, including any trim pieces that can be pre-cut.

Create an organised tool station with everything within easy reach. Essential items include your spirit level, screwdriver, fixing screws, silicone sealant, and plastic packers.

A quick application of protective tape around brickwork and finishes prevents unnecessary touch-ups, keeping the job moving efficiently. By setting up effectively from the start, installers can minimise disruptions, maintain a high standard of work, and reduce the likelihood of callbacks.

Efficient Old Window Removal

Removing the old window frame efficiently requires the right approach. Start by protecting the surrounding area, then remove any glazing beads and glass panes first. This makes the entire frame lighter and easier to handle. A flat pry bar and chisel are the usual tools for breaking the external seal without causing excess damage.

For stubborn frames, an oscillating tool can quickly cut through old sealant and fixings. Work methodically around the frame, paying particular attention to the bottom of the window frame where moisture may have caused deterioration. Keep your work area clean as you go to prevent trips and reduce clean-up time after the job.

Precise Levelling and Fitting

Getting the new window level the first time saves significant adjustment later. Start at the bottom of the frame, using packers to achieve the perfect level. Work your way up the sides of the frame, checking as you go. The key is to maintain equal gaps around the entire frame while ensuring it sits squarely.

Pay special attention to fixing positions, as overtightening can cause frame distortion and operation issues. Once level, apply a continuous bead of silicone around the frame for a watertight seal. Check the operation of the window before completing the final external seal.

Common Installation Issues and Solutions

Even with thorough preparation and care, issues can still arise. There are several common ones that we have found to plague installers.

Uneven or Misaligned Frames

Perhaps the most common issue we see is frame misalignment. The solution lies in the proper use of packers and careful measuring before any fixing takes place. Check diagonals to ensure the frame is square, and never force fixings if resistance is met, as this often indicates misalignment that needs addressing.

Draughts and Insulation Problems

Draught issues often stem from inadequate sealing rather than the window itself. Ensure comprehensive coverage when applying sealant, particularly at the edge of the frame. Any gaps in the watertight seal will compromise performance. Use appropriate foam where needed, but avoid excess that might cause distortion.

Water Ingress

Water leaks often occur at the bottom of the frame or around the cill area. Make sure proper drainage paths remain clear and that the external seal is complete. Pay particular attention to corner joints and any meeting points between different materials.

Operation Issues

Sticking windows and doors usually occurs due to frame distortion during fitting. Maintain equal gaps around the frame, avoid overtightening fixings, and check operation throughout the installation. Remember that uPVC can expand and contract, so appropriate spacing is crucial.

Protecting Surrounding Areas

Damage to surrounding finishes often occurs during old window removal. Use tools with care and never force removal where gentle persistence will work. Protecting areas with tape prevents damage and saves time on later repairs.
